Well, mods for games all vary in quality don't they? So one of our resident supervillains Kingmonkey has stepped up to the playte to review the quite old Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Long Night mod. Read on for a great review:
Well, After all the effort I went through to get this, I'm disappointed.
It is basically a mod that turns Vice City into a zombie infested nightmare of a city. There are both good and bad points to the game.
On the good side, it is dark and creepy. I mean, the city basically remains the same, but it's always night and it always seems to be raining. No I didn't get very far, so I can't confirm that.
The citizens of Vice City are beautifully remade into animate corpses. They are in varying stages of decay and damage. They look cool and when this tidal wave of citizens approaches you, it gets across the fear of the situation.
This brings us to the first bad point I encountered. There is literally no end to the zombies. They spawn real close with the draw distance being less than you would normally get in GTA:VC. So you have no time to react. Atmospheric, yes. Frustrating, yes. Eventually, you end up with this massive crowd of zombies following behind you.
This brings me to bad point 2. The dialogue hasn't been changed. People still talk like they do in the real game. No voice replacements with groans or anything. Just people complaining about their shopping and whatnot. They cluster up on you so fast that it's almost impossible to get into a new vehicle. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GET INTO A HELICOPTER! With the time it takes to get the rotor up to speed, you will be pulled out.
You start off as a soldier in a tank with a gunner on top. This makes you near indestructible as long as you don't slow down. I drove around the downtown core for a bit realizing that a tank is next to useless against pedestrians.
The storyline asks you to get to VROCK and play the tape. Every time I get in there, someone kills me with a shotgun. EVERY TIME! How is that cool? I can't play around outside for fear of getting swamped, and I can't go inside without being shot or killed as well. Forget about trying to go into a builing. In the airport I had the same problem. Swamped. No vehicles on the road. Very few in parking lots
GTA:VC is not a shooter. It has some elements, but overall lacks the ability to deal with this scale of combat. Especially when they start you off with the assault rifle.
All in all, it looked very cool and the storyline may have been compelling enough to continue but the gameplay was too difficult. If you're an adept of GTA combat, this may be for you. If you like a bit more balance, then try it to see what it looks like, but remember it is very difficult.
The only thing I can tell you is to check out www.gtacomplex.com to find the Mod Installer and the Long Night Mod. You can get some decent download bandwidth there and don't seem to need to register to download (although I did).
If only I owned GTA:Vice CIty on the PC, I'd have to back up this review with another. Well, it's a great thing that one of our community members went through a ton of crap to get it :) Check it out if you like zombies, for our community does. Thanks to Kingmonkey, oh, and Sleazydinosaur for reminding us of it...
LONG LIVE GEROGE ROMERO!
